Admission Arrangements
Statement of Special Educational Needs
St Giles is a school for children with moderate, severe, and complex learning needs. Admission to school is through a Statement of Special Educational Needs. A statement is issued by the Education Authority after a child has been assessed under Section 323 of the 1996 Education Act.
Admission Age
The age at which pupils are admitted varies and is dependent on the individual needs of each child. Pupils may be admitted on or around their third birthday and may remain until nineteen years of age.
Parent/Teacher Counsellor
For nursery age children the pre-school Early Years Team will liaise with the family and the school before the admission date. Meetings are held for all new parents and pupils to look around the school, to discuss curriculum needs and to meet the staff.
Catchment Area
The catchment area for the school is Bassetlaw, and parts of Newark and Sherwood the main population centres of which are Retford and Worksop. Children from adjacent areas, such as Derbyshire, may be admitted subject to the agreement of the parents, the school and their respective Education Authorities.
Contact with Parents Maintaining Contact With Parents
The school is anxious that good contact should continue to be maintained with parents. This is achieved by an Annual Review when a written report of the child’s progress is prepared by the class teacher, and parents are invited to submit their observations and comments. A meeting is arranged between, parents, teachers and other professionals who have been involved in working with the child. Termly reviews of pupils’ progress are conducted by class teachers. Parents are encouraged to contact school at any time should they have any concerns, questions or comments.
Visiting Arrangements
Prospective parents and their children are most welcome to visit school prior to the child’s admission. Arrangements for a mutually convenient date may be arranged through the Early Years Team, Educational Psychologist or by direct contact with the Head Teacher.
A prior appointment is advisable for all visits thus avoiding a wasted journey.
Transport Arrangements
Transport arrangements for your child travelling to and from school will be made in agreement with the local authority. Transport may be by private coach, taxi, or ambulance as appropriate. Children who live within reasonable distance of school may wish to walk to school. Individual special needs are given extra consideration and transport arrangements are decided before admission after consultation with everyone concerned. Any necessary harnesses and seats are provided.
